HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Minister of State for Interior Affairs, and HE Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin Khalifa bin Abdul Aziz Al Thani, Minister of Municipality and Urban Planning, along with other senior officials from the Qatar Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and the Ministry of Interior (MOI) Traffic Department, graced the inauguration of the first phase of Qatar’s Traffic Control Centre.

The project, administered by Ashghal in collaboration with the Traffic Department, saw the implementation of two main Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) building blocks; adaptive traffic signal system and CCTV surveillance system. The Traffic Tech Group, a specialist traffic systems integrator, is the company responsible for the Design / Build of the project.

The Traffic Control Centre project first phase included the connection of 31 intersections to Doha’s SCATS system, a traffic signal system that operates in real-time adaptive mode, automatically monitors traffic at all approaches to intersections, adjusts cycle times & green splits, and offsets every cycle time to suit current conditions. Also included are the installation of 29 PTZ IP dome cameras strategically positioned at critical intersections, advanced IP video management and recording system, and control room with video wall and operator’s console. An expansion phase of the project has already started and expected to eventually cover all signalized intersections in Qatar within the next 12- 18 months.

During the inauguration, the distinguished Ministers were briefed by Engineer Nasser Ali Al Mawlawi, President & Chairman of Ashghal, Engineer Yousef Abdulrahman Al Emadi, Director of Roads Operation & Maintenance Department of Ashghal, and Brigadier Mohammed Saad Al-Kharji, Director of the MOI Traffic Department. Planning and implementation of traffic management strategies, in accordance to regulations and current traffic congestion issues observed from the control room were explained. In addition, live operation of the CCTV surveillance system as it displays traffic movement and multi-angled views from one intersection to another were shown.

HE Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani expressed appreciation to the Public Works Authority, the Traffic Department, and to the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, for their collaboration in planning strategies to improve traffic conditions throughout the country. He noted that the Traffic Control Centre will not only help alleviate congestion problems on the streets of Qatar, it will also serve security interests of the country.
