Lusail Expressway Project - Qatar

Lusail Expressway is one of the biggest among 30 road projects to be developed as part of Qatar's seven-year expressway programme initiated in 2010 to connect people and places across the city of Doha and Qatar through 900km of new roads, involving a number of underpasses, flyovers and multi-level interchanges.

The project will involve 5.3km of four-lane highway in both directions and three major interchanges in Northern Doha, namely the Al Wahda Interchange, the Onaiza Interchange and the Pearl Interchange.

The expressway will also have two service lanes in the multi-level interchange areas, and include a complex network of tunnels, flyovers and junctions in order to meet the future traffic demands by providing easy and quick connectivity.

In addition, the project also involves the construction of two new multi-lane canal crossing bridges.

Traffic Tech has developed detailed design of:

  • Lusail Expressway Traffic Control Center (TCC)
  • Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) equipment on open road and tunnels
  • Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) as one system that would monitor and control traffic on the entire length of Lusail Expressway (both open/surface road and tunnels).

The main purpose of the ITS work for Lusail Expressway is to equip it with traffic management system that provides drivers with warnings, manage speed limits, provide drivers with appropriate travel time and re-routing information, automated responses to traffic conditions, traffic density, incidents, special events and maintenance work.

This Lusail Expressway Project is equipped with highly advanced ITS components including:

  • Magnetometer Detection Systems (MDS)
  • Closed Circuit TV Cameras (CCTV)
  • License Plate Recognition (LPR) System
  • Automatic Incident detection (AID) System
  • Dynamic Message Signs (DMS)
  • Lane Control Signs (LCS)
  • Over-Height Vehicle Detection System (OVDS)
  • Weigh In Motion (WIM)
  • Emergency Roadside Telephone System (ERT)
  • Radio rebroadcasting System (RRS)
  • Public Address System (PA)
  • Road Weather Information System (RWIS)
  • Roadside Controllers & Communications System
  • Control Room

Qatar Traffic Control Centre
Doha - Qatar

Traffic Tech (Gulf) designed and built Doha’s City Wide IP-based CCTV Surveillance System on 41 intersections integrated with the city’s SCATS® Adaptive Traffic Signal System, a project the realized the implementation of two main ITS building blocks.

The project has gone through the first phase where proof of concept has been successful and is now in the second phase of implementation. Further phases are planned until all signalized intersections are connected to the system.

System Includes:

  • SCATS® Adaptive Traffic Signal System controlling 76 intersections
  • 44 PTZ IP Dome Cameras (36x zoom) on 41 intersections
  • Cameras and traffic signal controllers are connected to the control room via MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching) IP VPN, Fiber Optic, and/or wireless. It is worthy to highlight the flexibility of the system as all these communications media work in one system.
  • Routing and switching hardware
  • Advanced IP Video Management & Recording System
  • Control Room with Video Wall and Operator’s Console
  • Operation and Maintenance for 30 months

SCATS Central Urban Traffic Control System
Yanbu AlSinayiah, Saudi Arabia

Traffic Tech designed and built Yanbu’s centrally controlled SCATS adaptive traffic signal system, designed to control 55 intersections using analogue leased telephone lines.  Further expansion of the system is planned complete with a new IP communications network to gradually replace the existing analogue lines.

Traffic Signal Installations

Traffic Tech supplied and/or installed and commissioned over 500 signalized intersections in several countries throughout the Middle East and Arabian Gulf region including:

  • 197 intersections for the Public Works Authority (PWA) – Qatar
  • 78 intersections for Qatar Petroleum (QP) Industrial Cities of Mesaieed, Dukhan, and Ras Laffan - Qatar
  • 7 Intersections for Hamad International Airport - Qatar
  • 2 Intersections for The Pearl - Qatar
  • 2 Intersections for Qatar Foundation - Qatar
  • 35 intersections – Yanbu, Saudi Arabia
  • And others in Bahrain, Syria, and Lebanon.

In addition, Traffic Tech holds an ongoing contract to supply and install traffic signal system at Lusail City - Qatar for 55 intersections.


Signalizing Roundabouts

Traffic Tech has developed a unique phasing and timing system for signalizing roundabouts and have so far signalized more than 20 roundabouts in Qatar.
